Patiala, September 6
At a time when the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) is opposing an alliance with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to contest the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Navjot Singh Sidhu, former president of the party’s Punjab unit, extended support to the party high command. Decision today.
PPCC has so far clarified its stand more than once on this issue. Congress constituency in-charges and party legislators have strongly ruled out the idea of forging an alliance with AAP, whom they accuse of pursuing baseless vigilance cases against former party ministers and legislators. PPCC chief Amarinder Singh Raja Waring, Leader of Opposition Pratap Singh Bajwa and other leaders have repeatedly said that they will continue to oppose AAP in Punjab.
Sidhu, however, on Wednesday backed the party high command’s India alliance. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Sidhu wrote: “The decision of the party high command is supreme. It is for a larger purpose, to respect the spirit of the Constitution and to free institutions from the shackles that derive their power from constitutional values, keeping the national interest paramount. To save our democracy, petty waste pump politics full of selfish vested interests must be discarded.Elections are not waged for the upcoming election; they are waged for the next generation. Jai Hind. Jurrega Bharat.”
Later, his wife and former MLA Navjot Kaur Sidhu wrote: “Here we are creating factions within a party and destroying our own factions to become the chief. This is not the way. Taking everyone along and following the path of truth is the only way to strengthen our parent party.”
